The Repair Window

The formula readies the night. Sleep does the repair. Many fingers make a fist.

Sleep is not the time when nothing happens. It is the body’s nightly repair shift — when growth hormone pulses, the brain flushes its waste, tissues rebuild, and the day’s learning is filed away. The evening formula is built to help you reach that repair window. This is how you earn it.

What happens while you sleep

The repair shift

In deep sleep, the body runs its maintenance program. The largest natural growth-hormone pulse of the day is released, driving tissue repair. The brain opens its glymphatic system — a plumbing network that, during sleep, clears metabolic waste (including the proteins linked to cognitive decline) far faster than it can while you’re awake. Meanwhile hormones that govern appetite, blood sugar, and stress are reset. Miss the sleep and you miss the repair — which is why even a few short nights raise inflammation and blunt glucose control.

Regularity beats duration

The most actionable lever

Here is the finding that changes how to think about sleep. When researchers tracked tens of thousands of people, how consistent your sleep timing is predicted mortality more strongly than how many hours you slept. A regular bed-and-wake time — even a slightly short but steady one — beat long-but-erratic sleep. Your body runs on a clock; keeping that clock steady is the single most powerful, and most doable, sleep upgrade.

Regularity
a stronger predictor of all-cause mortality than sleep duration (Windred 2024, ~60,000 adults)
7–9 hrs
the range most adults do best in — with consistent timing mattering as much as the total

How to earn deep sleep

The levers that work
Set the clock

Rhythm & light

  • Same bed & wake time, seven days a week
  • Bright light & daylight in the morning
  • Dim, warm light in the last hour; screens down
  • Morning light is the anchor of the whole rhythm
Set the stage

Environment & inputs

  • Cool, dark, quiet room
  • No caffeine after early afternoon
  • No alcohol near bed — it wrecks deep sleep
  • A wind-down ritual (a warm bath — see the Heat Ritual)

Sleep and the formula, together

The formula and the practice

The evening RENEW stack is designed for exactly this window: glycine, magnesium, L-theanine, and Suan Zao Ren support the body’s own calming systems to ease sleep onset and depth, while phosphatidylserine blunts the evening cortisol that fragments sleep. But no supplement replaces the fundamentals — a supplement can help you fall and stay asleep; only a steady schedule, morning light, and a dark cool room build the rhythm underneath. Take the formula to support the night; keep the habits that make the night possible.

The practice

Anchor the clock
Same wake time every day — even weekends. This one habit does the most.
Light by day
Get outside in the morning. Keep evenings dim; screens off the last hour.
Cool & dark
A cool, dark, quiet room. A warm bath 60–90 min before bed speeds sleep onset.
Guard the edges
No caffeine after early afternoon; no alcohol near bed. Take RENEW 60–90 min before sleep.
